Salary commensurate with experience. 

The research associate will collaborate with Dr(s). Clausell Mathis, Barbara Schneider, Joe Krajcik, and Sheneka Williams from the Colleges of Education. Their role includes developing and revising project-based curricular materials for high school physics and chemistry, supporting research design and development, collecting and organizing data, analyzing data, and contributing to scholarly writing.

 
The role involves working closely with Dr. Clausell Mathis, Joseph Krajick, the CREATE for STEM Institute director, and other MSU faculty members. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Developing, implementing, and revising culturally responsive secondary school physics and chemistry project-based curriculum materials.
  2. Creating, refining, and analyzing assessments to evaluate student learning.
  3. Assisting in designing and developing qualitative and quantitative physics and chemistry education research projects, which involves collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  4. Designing, developing, and implementing professional development programs for teachers in rural, urban, and suburban schools. This will likely include facilitating professional learning communities of in-service physics and chemistry teachers. This will likely include examining teachers' experiences in developing culturally responsive project-based curricula in terms of shifts in teacher identity
  5. Providing management and leadership for the project, which will involve mentorship, facilitating meetings, and collaborating with the PI’s and other postdocs on the project.
  6. Collaborating with a team to plan and write reports, conference papers, and journal articles to disseminate research findings.
  7. Making presentations at regional and national conferences
  8. Assisting in developing workshops for physics and chemistry teachers in developing culturally responsive project-based curricula.


Candidates will collaborate with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students at the CREATE for STEM Institute at Michigan State University, accessible via https://create4stem.msu.edu/. This collaboration will also extend to MSU's Physics and Chemistry Education group.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Science Education

Minimum Requirements

Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in the sciences, with a preference for specializations in physics, chemistry, or science education.

Desired Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, or Science Education, ideally with a solid physics and/or chemistry background. The ideal candidate will also possess a strong understanding of developing culturally responsive project-based curriculum and have experience in assessment development. Additionally, knowledge of mixed-methods research and prior experience in secondary science teaching will be highly valued.
