Developing NGSS-aligned 3-Dimensional Learning Assessment Workshop; March 12th (Thursday)-14th (Saturday), 2020; by invitation only

Introduction:
CREATE for STEM at MSU will hold a three-day invited workshop to build capacity in lead science teachers, science teacher facilitators, and science district leaders to design and develop assessment tasks that align with the NGSS.

The goals of the workshop aim to
Build capacity to create, evaluate, and use classroom-based formative assessment aligned to NGSS for secondary science classrooms.
Develop a professional learning community for all participants who are middle and high school teachers including state leaders in science education and assessment.

The challenge we face is how to develop three-dimensional learning assessments. In this workshop, participants will learn a research-based systematic process for developing NGSS-aligned three-dimensional learning assessment. Participants will also gain hands-on experience working on each phase of the process including unpacking of performance dimensions, developing integrated dimension maps, articulating learning performances, specifying design patterns, and designing tasks and associated rubrics. The process stems from work conducted by the Next Generation Science Assessment collaborative (NGSA process).

Workshop Objectives:
Use a systematic research-based approach (NGSA process) for developing NGSS-aligned 3-dimensional learning assessment.
Create, share and evaluate assessment tasks based on the NGSA process.
Develop the capability to evaluate and modify existing assessment tasks to determine if they align with NGSS 3-dimensional learning.

Workshop Highlights:
Jim Pellegrino, an internationally renowned expert on assessment, will provide a keynote.
Participants will have time to interact with colleagues and university researchers to design NGSS aligned assessments.
The assessment tasks developed at the workshop will be available for public use by posting on the CREATE (NGSA) website with the authors’ names.
All participants will have travel, subsistence, and lodging paid for by a gift from Dr. Rick Stiggins who graduated from MSU’s Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education.
